Arizona State will enter its vital October 12 match against Utah without quarterback Sam Leavitt whose health condition has technically put him out of the game. It is a critical moment in the season with the Sun Devils trying to continue their early momentum in the Big 12 against one of the most disciplined defenses in the conference.

A Major Offensive Shift

The absence of Leavitt throws the whole offensive outlook of Arizona State.Known for his quick reads, mobility, and ability to extend plays under pressure, Leavitt had been central to ASU’s growing offensive rhythm. Without him, the Sun Devils lose not only a signal-caller but even a playmaker who dictated tempo and spacing - two components that have characterized the system Kenny Dillingham has operated with in this season.

Jeff Sims is supposed to start in his place. Although Jeff does not have the improvisational ability that Leavitt possesses. But he offers a more steadier pocket presence with a powerful arm that would have been well-suited to the structured short-yardage drives. Expect the Sun Devils to play to a better balanced game plan - more ground attack, quick passing concepts to make Utah defensive front honest.

C.J. Fite and his offensive line will have to uphold a consistency of protection, and the wideout. Jordyn Tyson will continue to be the key to the field stretch and creation of down field opportunities.

Defense Responsibility Increases

It is also because the defense of Arizona State will have more responsibility since the offense would not be as dynamic. Xavion Alford and Keyshaun Elliott are to be very instrumental in ensuring discipline and reducing explosive plays of Utah. The plan to use should be one that is constructed on patience - to make Utah drive long instead of hit fast.

It could not have come at a more difficult time to ASU when Leavitt was injured. The Sun Devils are 4-1 and starting to establish themselves, but losing their leader to one of the ranked teams may put a halt to the growth. Still, this moment may test Dillingham’s adaptability more than any other, and how ASU responds without Leavitt could define the rest of its season.
