Arizona State is leading Iowa State by a slim lead of 17-16 at halftime in a close and evenly balanced game. The second quarter saw both teams pick up steam following a slow and wary first quarter, with the second half to follow.
The Rhythm of the Arizona State Offense
Arizona State quarterback Jeff Sims has performed calmly and effectively, passing 11 out of 18 attempts with 175 yards and a single score. His relationship with tight end Chamon Metayer has especially taken a toll, as Metayer has accumulated five receptions totalling 65 yards with one important touchdown that gave ASU momentum in the second quarter.
On the field, the rushing division at ASU has played its part well, with 55 rushing yards by the featured running back to ensure that the Sun Devils have kept the offensive balance and ensured that the Iowa State defense does not overcommit to the pass.
Iowa State Learning on Ground Control
Iowa State has been more methodical on offense and has been boosted by Carson Hansen's excellent rushing performance. Hansen has recorded 10 carries and 55 yards, always and always shifting the chains and contributing to keeping the Cyclones in possession.
Quarterback Rocco Becht is 7-of-13, 74 yards, safe, and has restricted explosive-play opportunities. At the end of the second quarter, Iowa State was within one point of halftime, even though it was emphasizing the run.
What to Watch in the Second Half
Since it is a one-point difference between the teams, the second half will most likely depend on performance and course corrections. Arizona State will seek to keep on misusing the mismatches in the receiving game, especially with Metayer, but allow Sims time to work.
Meanwhile, Iowa State might eventually need to make its passing attack bigger in order to escape predictability and provide more significant scoring chances.
