The Heisman Trophy seems to truly be between either Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty or Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter. While there are a lot of other worthy candidates for the trophy, it seems to have come down to those two players this season.
However, Arizona State running back Cam Skattebo is reminding Heisman voters there are more than two candidates for the prestigious award.
In their first season in the Big 12, the Sun Devils, who were picked to finish last in the conference in the preseason, are currently playing in the Big 12 Championship game against the Iowa State Cyclones. With Arizona State's top wide receiver Jordyn Tyson out for today and the rest of the postseason due to an upper-body injury, a lot will be put on Skattebo today.
In the second quarter, Skattebo ran the ball into the endzone for a touchdown to give the Sun Devils a 17-10 lead over the Cyclones, and while in the endzone, Skattebo had a bit of a celebration that will draw the attention of the Heisman voters.
Skattebo hit the Heisman pose in the endzone after scoring, showing that he is just as deserving to win this award. Now, Skattebo won't win the award this season, not just because of Jeanty but also because Skattebo missed a few games this season due to injury. However, he was still a big part of Arizona State's offense, with 1,398 rushing yards and 17 rushing touchdowns.
The best part of all of this is that Skattebo scored again before the end of the half to give the Sun Devils a 24-10 lead. Skattebo did it again with another touchdown run and hit the Heisman pose on the Cyclones, just to give them a bit of a reminder of how good he is.
Skattebo has been big for the Sun Devils in the first half of the Big 12 Championship game with 140 rushing yards on ten rushing attempts and two rushing touchdowns. The senior rushing back has stepped up big in the absence of Arizona State's best pass catcher.
Iowa State will start with the ball in the second half as they try to claw out of the 24-10 they are currently in the Big 12 Championship.
