The spring window of the transfer portal has officially opened up. Arizona State does not find itself with any glaring holes at this point, but there will be some additions - as well as losses - over the coming weeks. Make sure to check back here for updates as they roll in.

Incoming Targets

Wisconsin WR Mark Hamper

Mark Hamper was in the transfer portal back in the winter after starring at Idaho. A former high school teammate of Sam Leavitt's, Hamper was an early target for Arizona State due to the connection. Ultimately, he picked Wisconsin, but is now back in the portal. Perhaps he'll choose Tempe this time around.

Missouri C Talan Chandler

A Nevada native, Talan Chandler had been recruited by Arizona State before he chose Missouri. Now, after playing one game in his redshirt year, Chandler is in the portal. Kenny Dillingham has spoken often in spring ball about issues with snapping from his backup centers, so Chandler may be a prime target to bolster that depth.

Outgoing Transfers

RB Alton McCaskill

Alton McCaskill was one of several running backs that transferred into Tempe a year ago. The former Colorado and Houston runner quickly fell behind a much-improved Cam Skattebo, and he was struggling to break into the rotation in spring ball this year behind Kyson Brown, Raleek Brown, and new transfer Kanye Udoh. A talented player, McCaskill was simply the odd man out here.

DT JP Deeter

JP Deeter was the first Sun Devil to enter the transfer portal this spring. The junior defensive tackle was unlikely to see the field this year behind upperclassmen CJ Fite, Zac Swanson, Jacob Rich Kongaika, and Blazen Lono Wong. It's not a huge surprise to see the Texas native look for playing time elsewhere.

QB Navi Bruzon

A walk-on quarterback who was named the scout team MVP this past season, Navi Bruzon was likely locked into the third spot on the depth chart behind Sam Leavitt and Jeff Sims. He will look for a better opportunity to play elsewhere.

OL Kaden Haeckel

A local product and walk-on offensive lineman, Kaden Haeckel was simply pushed out by the numbers game. Arizona State has added a lot of bodies along the offensive line, and Haeckel was unlikely to earn one of the new roster spots that will be created by the House v NCAA settlement later this summer.

WR Max Ware

Like Haeckel, Max Ware is a local walk-on who hardly saw the field and was getting pushed out by a deep wide receiver room. He has two years of eligibility left and might be able to catch on with a Group of 5 program in need of receiver help.

OL Connor Cameron

Much like Haeckel, Connor Cameron has chosen to move on from Arizona State after seeing the offensive line room get overcrowded. The walk-on was unlikely to be included in the scholarship expansion later this summer.

DE Chance Symons

Chance Symons was another walk-on who received word that he was unlikely to be included on the roster once scholarships were increased and opted to explore his options in the transfer portal.

TE Sinjin Smith

Repeating the common theme here, Sinjin Smith saw the writing on the wall as a walk-on. In his particular case, the tight end room is very full with returners Chamon Metayer and Cameron Harpole joined by newcomers Khamari Anderson and freshman AJ Ia, all four of whom have looked great in spring ball.

WR Armon Collins

Much like Max Ware, Armon Collins was a walk-on at wide receiver who found himself in a very crowded room and chose to explore his options to catch on elsewhere before being lost in the shuffle here in Tempe.

K Ian Hershey

The Sun Devils' leading kicker in 2024 is in the portal, though it's not much of a surprise. Ian Hershey was the best of three kickers Arizona State used last year, but he still struggled mightily, hitting on just 58.3% of his field goals. Transfer Jesus Gomez has looked the part in spring practice, making Hershey the obvious odd man out.
