Arizona State football shocked the college football world this season by winning the Big 12 Conference in year one of its membership, after being picked to finish 16 out of 16 during the preseason. The Sun Devils earned the No. 4 seed in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff and a first-round bye which saw them nearly beat Texas in the Peach Bowl.
After a miracle 11-3 record, just a year removed from a three-win bowl-banned 2023 season, ASU saw itself finish in the AP Top 10 (No. 7) for the first time since 1996. Head coach Kenny Dillingham put together an Avengers-level team in just year two at the helm, mastering the transfer portal and recruiting gems out of the dust to come play for him in the desert.
Until late this season, hardly anybody in the national media were paying attention to ASU's star players but Wednesday three of them received much deserved recognition in year-end rankings.
3 Sun Devil stars ranked in ESPN's Top 100 for the 2024-25 season
ESPN released its Top 100 players for the 2024-25 season on Wednesday and not surprisingly, three Sun Devils were recognized.
Fifth-year senior running back Cam Skattebo came in the highest at No. 4, which feels like a small consolation for national media members snubbing him as a Heisman Trophy finalist. The Sacramento State transfer broke several school records and trailed only Boise State's Ashton Jeanty in all-purpose yards this season, finishing a disrespectful fifth place in the Heisman voting. At least now his worth is being recognized.
Redshirt freshman quarterback Sam Leavitt was ranked No. 58 on ESPN's list and 11th among all quarterbacks. That seems rather low given how his skills reminded folks more of school legend Jake Plummer than anyone else who has stepped foot in Mountain America Stadium. His 2,885 passing yards and 24 touchdowns weren't phenomenal by any means but there's a few players that Leavitt was more impactful than across the sport.
Redshirt freshman wide receiver Jordyn Tyson just made the list at No. 89 which is probably an appropriate spot. That being said, Tyson will be a top many watchlists for 2025 as he recovers from a shoulder injury. His 1,101 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns put him near the top of the Big 12 Conference and will likely be Leavitt's top target again as Dillingham reloads the squad for another run at the CFP.
