Even though Arizona State came up just short in the 2025 Chic-fil-a Peach Bowl, fans still have a lot to be proud of from this season.
In the 39-31 double-overtime loss to Texas, running back Cam Skattebo put on a masterclass in overall performance on the gridiron. His 284 scrimmage yards and three total touchdowns, including a 42-yard scoring pass, were enough to earn him offensive MVP honors - the first time in the game's history a player from the losing side has won it.
But lost in the chaos of the fourth quarter comeback and double-overtime heartbreak were two gigantic accomplishments by Skattebo, breaking two huge school records.
Cam Skattebo breaks two ASU football records in monster Peach Bowl performance
Several Sun Devil football legends were in attendance Wednesday in Atlanta, including former quarterback Jake Plummer and former running back Eno Benjamin.
Skattebo actually surpassed Benjamin's single-season rushing yards record (1,642) with his 143 against Texas. The mark is now set at an insane 1,711 yards after Wednesday.
On top of that, his two rushing touchdowns against the Longhorns helped him claim the single-season total touchdowns record as well (24). He already claimed the single-season rushing touchdowns record earlier in the season (18) and has raised the bar to 21.
That's three massive school records Skattebo shattered this season, easily putting him amongst ASU's best running backs - if not players - of all time. Don't believe me? Just take a look at his scrimmage yards from this year and add them to 2023.
In just two years he racked up 3,385 scrimmage yards as well as 172 passing yards and two passing touchdowns. What other running back in college football, let alone ASU, can claim that impressive resume?
It's unquestionable that Skattebo was a beyond special talent and fans were lucky to witness him in just the short time he was in Tempe. Now he'll likely play on Sundays with a bright future ahead.
ASU has only retired five jersey numbers in the program's history, dare we suggest Skattebo's No. 4 be the next one to be given the prestigious honor. His career resume certainly gives him a strong case. Benjamin certainly became one of his strongest advocates on the sideline Wednesday.
