Sophomore – National fame

The entire nation learned about who Jake Browning was in 2016. The sophomore signal caller has the best season of his collegiate career to date as he throws for 3,430 yards along with 43 passing touchdowns.

Browning’s 43 touchdowns are a school record at UW and tied the Pac-12 conference record while placing him second in the nation in touchdown passes. He set the school record for passing touchdowns in a single game with six, accomplishing the feat twice, and setting the school record for most touchdowns in a game with eight against Oregon.

The sophomore’s performance guided Washington to a 12-2 record and an appearance in the Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl versus Alabama in the first round of the College Football Playoff. Browning completed 20 of his 38 passes for 150 yards along with a touchdown and two interceptions.

His performance during the 2016 season led to instant media attention with internet bloggers putting Browning’s name future draft boards and pegged him as a 2017 favorite for the Heisman after finishing sixth.

Browning’s awards during the season included:

  • 2016 Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year
  • 2016 First-Team All-Pac-12
  • 2016 CoSIDA Academic All-America All-District VIII
  • 2016 Honorable Mention Academic All-Pac-12
  • 2016 Walter Camp Player of the Year Award Finalist
  • 2016 Manning Award Finalist
  • 2016 Maxwell Trophy Semi-Finalist
  • 2016 O’Brien Award Semi-Finalist

The departure of first-round draft pick John Ross among other departures would ultimately cause this season for Browning, to look like a fluke.
