Freshman at UW – The beginning

The four-star recruit made an immediate impact at UW, starting 12 of the team’s 13 games at the quarterback position. Browning finished his freshman season with 2,955 passing yards alongside 16 touchdowns to 10 interceptions.

Browning was the first ever true freshman to start at quarterback for the Huskies as he had several standout performances during the year. Browning’s standout performances include 326 yards and two touchdowns against Sacramento State to set the school record for most passing yards by a true freshman.

The freshman would break his own mark several times throughout the season including a 368 and three touchdown performance against Utah State, and 405 against Arizona State. The over 400-yard performance against ASU marked just one of seven 400-yard passing games in UW history. Browning would finish the game 28-for-52, both career highs at the time in completions and attempts.

Browning would cap off his freshman campaign with a Heart of Dallas Bowl victory over Southern Miss. The freshman signal caller went 23-for-34 in the matchup for 384 yards in his first bowl victory at UW.

The performance of the freshman earned him the honor of Co-Winner of UW’s Travis Spring most outstanding freshman award. Browning would soon find himself in the middle of the national spotlight after a productive freshman campaign.
