ASU Baseball: Sun Devils drop series finale to Washington
ASU baseball erased a 5-1 deficit but fell to Washington 7-6 in the rubber game of a three-game series as the Sun Devils drop to 19-27 (11-13 Pac-12).
Despite two ninth-inning runs to narrow the deficit, the Arizona State Sun Devils dropped the series in the final game of a three-game set 7-6 against the Washington Huskies at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
One day after a walk-off victory courtesy of Gage Canning, ASU was unable to get the bats going till late as the team was held scoreless until the seventh inning of play.
The senior southpaw Eli Lingos got the start for the Sun Devils as he received no run support in his four innings of work. The lefty allowed eight hits and five runs while only three of the runs were earned. Lingos struggled with extra-base hits with the Huskies collecting three in the game, using two to score runs.
Washington got things going from the get-go scoring two runs in the in both the third and fourth innings due to doubles in each inning. The Huskies dominated in leadoff situations throughout the game with five of the nine leadoff batters receiving a hit.
ASU started to crawl back into the game after the early 5-0 deficit after four innings in the seventh inning behind the tandem of junior Gage Canning and freshman Spencer Torkelson. The freshman got things started with an RBI single to knock in fellow freshman Alika Williams.
Canning, the following batter, was able to cut the lead to one with a three-run blast to narrow the margin to 5-4. Torkelson would finish the game with three hits in five at-bats with Canning ending the game with his lone home run.
Washington was able to answer back in the top of the ninth inning as redshirt freshman Dellan Raish entered the game for the Sun Devils and allowed a two-run home run to extend the Huskies lead to 7-4.
Despite the three-run margin, ASU answered back in the bottom of the ninth scoring two runs in the bottom half of the inning but was unable to tie the game or produce another walk off.
Freshman Drew Swift did not start the game for the first time this season as Alika Williams, the team’s day to day second basemen, started in his place. Swift would enter the game as a pinch-runner and collect a hit in his lone at-bat.

With the loss, ASU drops to 19-27 on the year and 11-13 in conference play with two Pac-12 series remaining. The Sun Devils will be back in action Wednesday for a midweek game at San Diego before opening a two-game series against Pacific next Sunday.
