What Will New Defensive Coordinator Phil Bennett Bring to ASU?

courtesy of: Sam Ficarro

“In a move that was reported Wednesday morning, Arizona State announced that former Baylor defensive coordinator Phil Bennett has agreed to take the same position in Tempe.

Bennett will replace Keith Patterson as defensive coordinator as Patterson will stay on as the linebackers coach.

The timing was a bit surprising considering we haven’t really heard any rumblings about a defensive coordinator change.

However, the decision to make a change was not surprising.”

This is definitely a move that needed to be made. If Todd Graham wants any chance of keeping his job after next season it starts with an improved defense, and Patterson wasn’t going to get that job done. Bennett brings with him a plethora of experience and a knack for producing NFL quality defensive players. If ASU can improve on the defensive side, we could see an offense that takes more chances down field knowing that they have a capable defense to help them out.

What is the Impact of Kelsey Moos’ Injury?

courtesy of: Sam Ficarro

“During ASU basketball’s double OT win over Cal, forward Kelsey Moos suffered a plantar fascia injury and is out a month. What is the impact of her absence?

Arizona State is coming off a successful weekend at Utah and Colorado coming away with a 19- and 22-point victories respectively versus both schools.

Head coach Charli Turner Thorne was able to utilize everyone on her roster and give everybody valuable minutes during conference games.

However, one key player was missing. That was forward Kelsey Moos.”

Moos’ injury is a big key to how much success ASU has moving forward in Pac-12 play. If they are able to weather the storm and at least tread water while she is out then they could be an even stronger team than last season. If they drop a majority of their games, then they will need her to come back and make an immediate impact on the court so that they can salvage their season.

Arizona State’s Kodi Justice has Found Freedom on Basketball Court

“If you listen real hard on Thursday night in McKale Center, there’s a good chance you’ll hear Kodi Justice barking orders at a freshman guard, directing a young forward into the post or pulling a frustrated teammate aside to offer a quick hype session.

It’s not all that long ago that such bold vocal leadership would’ve been unexpected out of Justice — surprising, shocking even.

Challenged with dyslexia as a young man, Justice found speaking in public difficult.

Now, months away from college graduation — he’ll be the first in his family to do so — and with a master’s degree, and potentially a doctorate on his mind, Justice is a case study in overcoming odds, in hard work and perseverance.”

Ahead of one of the biggest Pac-12 rivalries, a nice piece that reminds everyone that college athletes deal with the same struggles that everyone else deals with. In Justice’s case, it is speaking in public and dealing with dyslexia. A great article to get everyone ready for the first meeting between the Sun Devils and the Wildcats of the 2016-17 season.
