If you compare the recent play of Arizona State to the recent play of Stanford, you might not be all to excited if you’re a Sun Devil fan. But this isn’t no normal game. Today is senior night for ASU and that just might be enough motivation to pull an upset.

Heading into today, Arizona State has been one of the worst teams in the Pac-12. Their attacking game is non-existent. They have failed to score in their last five matches. Five matches! That means they haven’t scored since October 9. And lets not forget to mention that ASU hasn’t won since their OT victory against Washington on October 6.

The struggle to score in October can be credited to the absence of juniors Jazmarie Mader and Aly Moon. Both of them have missed at least three games. Head coach Kevin Boyd stated on Thursday that he believes that both of them will not play against Stanford.

Despite the absence of some key players, it will still be an intense because it is senior night. The night will be celebrating the final moments of seniors like Larisa Staub, McKenzie Grossman, Lucy Lara, and others as members of the ASU soccer program. They are ready to finish these final 180 minutes of the season on a positive note.

Staub spoke after the match against Cal and explained how the end of her Sun Devil career is both satisfying and upsetting. “It’s actually really bittersweet,” Staub said. After talking to ASU soccer great Cali Farquharson, Staub said that she has really worked hard in every game this season knowing the fact that she will never play that team ever again.

More from Devils in Detail

Stanford will be looking to ruin senior night, and there’s a good chance that they’ll do just that. They are atop of the standings in the Pac-12 with Colorado. They are tied for first in the conference in goals scored and assist. They have also only conceded eight goals in the Pac-12. Arizona State has given up eight goals in their last three games alone.

Key player to watch on the Cardinals is junior midfielder Andi Sullivan. She has been the definition of an all-around player this season.  The Virginia native leads Stanford in goals with eight and is second on the team in assist with seven. Her 23 points ranks fifth in all of the Pac-12. She is heading into Tempe in top form with four of her eight goals coming in the last three games.

Also look out for sophomore forward Kyra Carusa. Carusa leads the Cardinals in assist with 9.
