It's been a challenging start to the season for the Sun Devils, but this team is in a very familiar spot as last season with an identical 3-6-1 start.

The NCHC only presents a new challenge each week, and this week's challenge comes in the form of the highly ranked North Dakota Fighting Hawks. Arizona State holds an all-time record of 2-1-0 against the Hawks, the first game being an instant classic in the 2022 U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game that saw the Sun Devils go down 2-0 early to the Hawks before reeling off three unanswered goals to pull off the 3-2 upset win. Last season, the Sun Devils won the season series with 4 of a possible 6 points, winning 4-1 in the opener and losing 4-3 in overtime in the Return of T.J. Semptimphelter.
This weekend's series marks the first of four games between the two teams, as North Dakota will make a return trip January 23-24 to complete the home-and-home season series. This weekend will also be the return of another familiar face as former Sun Devil goaltender Gibson Homer will face off for the first time against his former team, the second straight season a goaltender has made the Tempe to Grand Forks trip in the offseason.
