Cam Skattebo is looking to convince folks be deserves a trip to New York City as a Heisman Trophy finalist.
The Arizona State running back has flown mostly under the radar this season but Saturday at the Big 12 Championship Game he formally announced himself to the college football world.
Skattebo rushed for a touchdown in the second quarter to put the Sun Devils up 17-10 over Iowa State and decided to hit the Heisman Trophy pose in the back of the endzone.
Skattebo entered the weekend with 1,398 rushing yards and 17 touchdowns, three short of the Arizona State all-time record set by Woody Green in 1972.
Boise State rusher Ashton Jeanty has taken most of the national spotlight at the position for his chase of the legendary Barry Sanders' 1988 single-season rushing record, leaving Skattebo as a relatively unknown commodity.
H2: Cam Skattebo could be Arizona State's first Heisman Trophy finalist since 19961996
Saturday is a win-and-in situation for both teams, as the winner of the Big 12 will earn an automatic berth to the College Football Playoff.
Arizona State hasn't been in this kind of situation since 2013 when it last played for a conference title and if it is successful, it would be the program's second-ever outright power conference championship. The last being in 1996 when quarterback Jake Plummer led the Sun Devils to the Rose Bowl as Pac-10 champions.
That same year Plummer was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy and finished third in the voting. Skattebo, if he convinces enough voters Saturday, would be first Heisman finalist since Plummer in 1996 to represent the Sun Devils.
Even If it doesn't happen, it's still a remarkable moment for the program to have a player in the national spotlight and receiving praise for his efforts this season. Even outlets like ESPN and On3 Sports believe Skattebo is Heisman material, ranking him in the Top 5 among potential candidates.
