Randy Bennett's Australian pipeline strikes again

The grind never stops for Randy Bennett and his new Arizona State staff, as the Sun Devils have added another name to their roster via the transfer portal. This one comes with a great deal of fanfare, too.

Joel Foxwell committed to Portland out of Australia a year ago. Bennett, who has thrived with his Australian pipeline over the years, pursued Foxwell at St. Mary's, but Portland was able to offer an immediate starting role to the point guard.

Foxwell started every game for the Pilots and he looked great doing so. He finished with 15.6 points, 6.5 assists, 4.3 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game. Foxwell also hit on 31.9% of his three's. He was named to the All-WCC first team, alongside several of Bennett's Gaels players, and became just the second freshman in program history to make the All-WCC first team; the other is NBA legend Greg Anthony.

Foxwell was a force for the Pilots, serving as their primary offensive facilitator. He led the team in both scoring and assists, and was one of just four players in college basketball this year to have multiple games with 15+ assists. Foxwell led the entire West Coast conference in assist per game, too.

He did that while shouldering the load as a scorer, too. Foxwell shot the ball a total of 463 times this season; second on the Pilots was Cameron Williams with 246 shots. Foxwell was also the only player on the team to top 1,000 minutes played.

His high volume as a freshman was a big part in being rated a 4-star transfer and the 18th best point guard in the portal.

Foxwell enters Tempe as the likely starter at point guard, though it should be expected that he'll work in a more traditional point guard capacity. Foxwell's playmaking was his best trait as a freshman, though he has the ability to heat up quickly as a scorer.

Bennett's system typically results in a more even spread in shot attempts, focusing on ball movement and threatening defenses with all five players. Foxwell's experience as a lead scorer is certainly valuable, but he won't have to be the main guy for the Sun Devils. That's likely to make him even better, too.

All of that, plus the opportunity to play on the Big 12 stage, played a role in Foxwell's decision to come to Arizona State.
