Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt is out for the rest of the 2025 college football season. On Friday, October 31, 2025, head coach Kenny Dillingham confirmed that Leavitt was going to have season-ending surgery to repair a lingering leg injury that has affected him most of the season.

Leavitt sustained the injury in the first place against Baylor on September 20 and remained out of the next game against Utah. He went back to action in later weeks, but the injury still lingered. Leavitt suffered the injury twice in the October 26 clash against Houston and eventually had to go off the field. He was subsequently spotted in a walking boot and was already disqualified in the next Arizona State game against Iowa State.

The move brings to an end what was set to be a critical developmental period for the young quarterback. Leavitt was regarded as a key figure in the Dillingham rebuilding offense, as a two-way potential threat and a presence during crucial games. He is gone, and this implies that Arizona State needs to revise its anticipated expectations and continuity on the offensive side.

Jeff Sims will remain as the starting quarterback of the team in the absence of Leavitt. Despite some preliminary starting experience at Nebraska and Georgia Tech. Sims joined the Sun Devils back in 2024, on a full-time basis, as they enter a critical period of their schedule.

This sudden news has brought uncertainty to ASU's fans, as Leavitt's injury is a major blow to the future course of Arizona State this season. But the program is optimistic about its richness and growth strategy for the current season.
