An inability to consistently win and illegal recruiting allegations are pretty bad characteristics to see in an NCAA football program's head coach. Herm Edwards had both.
In his final season with the Sun Devils, Edwards was in the midst of a recruiting scandal that involved sanctions for hosting recruits at ASU during an NCAA-mandated COVID dead period in 2020.
Other than his final year in Tempe, Edwards and Arizona State won an average of nearly 6 games a season. Similarly to Marmie's track record at ASU, Edwards' just wasn't good enough.
His inability to win during the 2022 season was capped off by a deplorable loss to Central Michigan, after which Edwards was fired... just three games into the season.
The Sun Devils' record that year was also 3-9, two of the wins coming after Edwards' departure.
