The Arizona State Sun Devils have done it again, this time, in a historical fashion.
Not only did the team sweep its rivals, the Arizona Wildcats, for the first time since the 2017-18 season, but Molly Miller, who goes by 'Moy Mier,' set the program record for most wins by a first-year head coach with 21 on Saturday.
"I know we won on the scoreboard, but women's basketball won today," Miller said about the Sun Devils vs. Wildcats women's basketball game, which had 8,767 fans in attendance, postgame.
Despite the Sun Devils dealing with their guards, Marley Washenitz and Jyah LoVett (who filled in for Last-Tear Poa, who was out due to a concussion), getting fouled out, they still found a way to win in overtime over the Wildcats on the road.
In the fourth quarter, Arizona surged ahead with a 10-0 run, pushing its lead to four points, 61-57. Arizona State quickly answered with a 4-0 run.
Forward McKinna Brackens then scored a game-tying basket, sending both teams into overtime in Tucson and positioning Arizona State for a dramatic win.
Throughout the game, Brackens led the team in scoring with 24 points and recorded seven rebounds, four assists, and three steals while playing 41 minutes of action.
To add to that, fifth-year guard Gabby Elliott had another impressive performance with 22 points and four three-pointers made, and sophomore forward Heloisa Carrera recorded a double-double of 11 points and ten rebounds.
Since the start of the season, the Sun Devils have established a reputation for relentless defensive intensity and battling until the final buzzer, particularly under Miller's leadership in her inaugural year.
With the win, Arizona State continues to prove to the nation why it deserves to participate in an NCAA Tournament, as it looks to return for the first time since 2019.
As they continue to prepare for this year's Big 12 Tournament push, the Sun Devils have four games remaining—one against a ranked team, No. 16 Texas Tech on the road—and look to build on the success and resurgence of the women's basketball program.
Miller said after Arizona State's win over the Utah Utes on Wednesday that the team will take it one game at a time, leading up to the tipoff of the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas.
"We are really focusing on just finishing the Big 12 play strong and just going from there," Elliott said Wednesday. "That has to be our main focus, taking it one game at a time, so at the end, we can figure out where we sit and how to go about (playing in) March."
