Arizona State’s quarterback room is entering a new phase ahead of the 2026 season following the departure of Sam Leavitt to LSU. Head coach Kenny Dillingham is now managing a fierce and competitive battle in the process of replacing a key player in spring practice to decide on the next starting quarterback of the team.
Sun Devils already have several options to choose from, including transfers Cutter Boley and Mikey Keene, redshirt freshman Cam Dyer, and true freshman Jake Fette. No declared starter yet, so the competition is very wide open as every quarterback is trying to prove himself as the leader of the offense.
Favorable Growth at Spring Camp
Dillingham has been optimistic because of the development that his quarterbacks have portrayed during the spring drills. Kenny stressed the high work ethic and continuous improvement of the group. He also included that their development has been noticeable with every session.
He explained that the quarterback unit is showing progressive growth in camp and pointed out how disciplined they were at a recent scrimmage. Dillingham reports that the group never made any direct interception, which he believes is a major decision-making and control. He explained that although he had a ball that was deflected, and led to a turnover, the quarterbacks did not make a bad choice of passing directly to a defender.
Dillingham further noted that minimizing turnovers is critical to winning games. He noted that if the team can protect the ball and avoid penalties, it will be in a strong position to succeed. Kenny thinks that the quarterbacks are starting to demonstrate that their understanding of the game flow is showing progress. This is also a promising sign as the competition progresses.
Experienced Transfers Lead the Race
Cutter Boley seems like a good fit for the quarterback position. Dillingham has said that no one has been officially named the starter yet. Boley has a lot of experience from his time at Kentucky. In 2025, he threw for 2,160 yards. Completed 65.8% of his passes. He also scored 15 touchdowns. Boley can play both as a passer and a runner.
Mikey Keene is also in the running for the job. He is from Chandler, and has an inspiring career. He played at Fresno State, and led the Mountain West Conference in completion percentage. Keene has thrown for over 8,000 yards in his career.
A Big Decision is Coming
As spring practice goes on, Arizona State's coaches have a decision to make. This decision could affect how well the team does in 2026. Good quarterbacks are competing. The tussle for the quarterback position is on the peak, and fans are supporting their favorite players to leas Sun Devils in the upcoming season.
