The Sun Devils are at a turning point of their season, much like at this point last season.

Last year, the obstacle was a 12-0-0 Denver Pioneers team that was on their national title defense, and the 4-7-1 Sun Devils stole the series at Magness Arena with a convincing sweep that let the rest of the NCHC know they meant business.

At 8-3-1, Denver still presents a formidable challenge for Arizona State, but there's an undeniable x-factor about seeing this series on the schedule that always brings out a higher gear of play.

The balanced scoring attack for the Pioneers has led them to a 5-game winning streak entering this series, with defensemen Eric Pohlkamp and Boston Buckberger leading the charge alongside freshman forward Clarke Caswell. For the Sun Devils, scoring has been at a premium at times but the seniors are leading by example with a combined 14 goals, 19 assists and 33 points from Bennett Schimek and Cruz Lucius. Both players recorded at least a point in each game at North Dakota, with Schimek enjoying a 5-point weekend (1 G-4 A). Schimek can reach the 40 career goal milestone with a goal in front of the home crowd this weekend.

Quentin Miller should be in line for the start in net for the Pioneers, while Coach Powers has been tight-lipped on his vision for both of Arizona State's goaltenders. In Tuesday's episode of Hell Frozen Over, Coach Powers hinted at the possibility of both Connor Hasley and Samuel Urban splitting series in net, but did not go in to detail on how that might shake out.

Coming to Mullett Arena as the No. 3 team in the nation may not bode well for Denver, as the Sun Devils have enjoyed success against highly ranked teams since the arena's opening in 2022, going 3-3 against top-three opponents over that span including a 6-5 overtime win over these Pioneers in the 2023-24 season.
