Although school isn’t quite in session yet for ASU students, fall sports are starting to begin! With that said, the craziness of college football season is right around the corner. Here is what happened this week…

Sun Devil Soccer is back

Soccer hosted Nevada on Thursday, August 14 in their season opening game. ASU is entering the year with an experienced core, and looked to extend its unbeaten home streak in non-conference play, which they did.

In fact, they delivered a strong start to the season, scoring 2 goals and shutting out Nevada with their defense.

Looking ahead, the Sun Devils will hit the road for a three-match at Texas starting August 21.

Former Sun Devil earns MLB honor

Luke Keaschall, former ASU standout, was named the American League Player of the Week following an impressive stretch with the Minnesota Twins.

He joins Mike Trout as the only rookies since 2005 to post a .500+ on-base percentage, 10+ RBI, and 5 stolen bases in a 10-game span.

Player Awards & Preseason Poll

This week, five Sun Devils were added to national preseason award watch lists.

Quarterback Sam Leavitt was named to the Manning Award watch list, given to the nation’s top quarterback. Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott was added to the watch list for the Butkus Award, which is presented to the best linebacker in the country.

Wide receiver Jalen Moss was added to the watch list for the Paul Hornung Award, which is given to the most versatile player. Xavion Alford was named to the Chuck Bednarik Award, given to college defensive player of the year. Finally, Jesus Gomez was put on the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, recognizing the top place-kicker.

As the Sun Devils enter the season with high hopes in the national rankings, those individual honors are in line with expectations.

ASU ranked NO. 11 in the Associated Press preseason poll, leading all Big 12 schools. This is the highest the Sun Devils have been ranked since entering the 1998 season.

15 Days Until Sun Devil Football

Football season is quickly approaching, with just 15 days to go until the Sun Devils take the field. ASU opens at home against NAU on August 30 and expect Mountain America to be packed. The Sun Devils will be kicking off their second season in the Big 12.

The wait is almost over.
