Freshman guard Joson Sanon is leaving Tempe after just one season under head coach Bobby Hurley. He averaged 11.9 points-per-game and saw significant playing time (mostly because injuries ravaged the roster all season long).
Sanon proved his worth as a four-star recruit, pairing well with fellow freshman phenom Jayden Quaintance (five-stars). The 6-foot-5, 19-year-old will be an attractive recruit for multiple high-profile programs this offseason.
Arizona State freshman Joson Sanon hits the transfer portal
It's a bit strange to see one of head coach Bobby Hurley's top recruits decide to leave Tempe after just one season, especially with Hurley returning for the final year of his contract in 2025.
That being said, the uncertainty of Hurley's tenure after that point may have been cause enough for Sanon to jump ship and re-establish his college and professional prospects elsewhere. It makes one wonder if Quaintance, a projected NBA Lottery pick, will do the same.
Sanon's talent combined with those of Quaintance and others on the Sun Devil roster in 2024-25 was impressive to watch, it just didn't translate to many wins. ASU finished the season 13-19 and 15th in the Big 12 Conference.
It's unclear if Sanon will participate in the team's first-round matchup with Nebraska at the College Basketball Crown tournament in Las Vegas on March 31. The NCAA transfer portal opens March 24 and closes on April 22.
