Arizona State wide receiver Jordyn Tyson was ruled out of Saturday's Big 12 Conference Championship Game with an unspecified injury.
Head coach Kenny Dillingham gave the unfortunate update to reporters Monday (h/t Associated Press via ESPN) as the team prepares for the massive matchup against No. 16 Iowa State.
"I don't want to give a complete three- , four-month out timetable but he's going to be out indefinitely," Dillingham said.
Tyson landed hard on his left shoulder in the third quarter of ASU's 49-7 rout of rivals Arizona in the Territorial Cup rivalry game over the weekend, seen with his arm in a sling on the sideline. He was the Sun Devils' leading receiver this season with 75 catches for 1,101 yards and 10 touchdowns after transferring from Colorado last year.
What will Tyson's injury absence mean for ASU's chances against Iowa State?
Losing a weapon like Tyson is huge for ASU. It takes the best option through the air away from quarterback Sam Leavitt and leaves the Iowa State defense one less thing to worry about in its scheme preparation this week.
Is it a fatal blow to ASU's chances to win the game? Not necessarily. But it means running back Cam Skattebo will have to be at the top of his game to ensure the run game doesn't get isolated and neutralized early.
Leavitt will have other reliable weapons at his disposal too. Receivers Xavier Guillory, Melquan Stovall and tight end Chamon Metayer will have to step up in Tyson's absence.
Admittedly, that may be a tough ask considering the three combined for 738 yards and eight touchdowns this year.
Without Tyson, Dillingham could be at a significant disadvantage in third and fourth-down situations. That doesn't bode well considering ASU has had season-long issues with its kicking game and this is a contest that very well could come down to a field goal.
Tyson's absence will hurt but the Sun Devils are still very alive in their quest to qualify for the College Football Playoff. It'll just be a moment for some unlikely hero to have to step into the limelight and have a career performance.
