Arizona State’s hopes of taking the series from their in-state rivals were diminished after a 5-3 loss to Arizona.
Despite a late rally in the ninth inning, the Sun Devils fell short, losing their first Big 12 series in program history. Starting pitcher Jack Martinez gave up all five of the Wildcats’ runs, while recording 12 strikeouts across seven innings. Arizona State’s offense had no response, until it was too late.
Now the Sun Devils will hope to avoid a sweep in the final game of this rivalry weekend series and make it a little less painful.
