Arizona State basketball continued its hot start to the season in a 90-53 win over San Diego at home in Tempe on Tuesday night.
While the score line suggests utter domination, it actually was a rough start to the game for the Sun Devils. The Toreros took an early lead and it wasn't until late in the first half when ASU went ahead and didn't look back, taking a seven point lead into halftime.
Freshman Joson Sanon and senior Basheer Jihad both led the team with 19 points but it was the former that had the most impact on the game splashing five three-pointers, almost half of the team's total (12).
ASU hoops dominate San Diego ahead of extended break
Tuesday's 37-point victory demonstrated the offensive and defensive prowess head coach Bobby Hurley has wanted his squad to display on the hard court all along. The Sun Devils outscored San Diego 50-20 in the second half alone.
Freshman phenom Jayden Quaintance hosted a certified block party, denying the Toreros five separate times and with enthusiasm as well.
The Sun Devils had five players hit double-digits in points Tuesday and on top of that, shot 49.1 percent from the field. While not exceptional, the offensive performance as a whole was something ASU fans had been longing to see.
The team now enters a 10-day break until its next game on Dec. 14 in Atlanta, Georgia against No. 13 Florida. That matchup will be critical in bolstering ASU's credentials (8-1) for a Top 25 ranking. The squad will round out its non-conference schedule on Dec. 21 against UMass in Springfield, Massachusetts.
ASU will also not return to Desert Financial Arena for 32 days believe it or not. The next time the Sun Devils will host a regular season game will be Jan. 4 against Colorado in the second contest of their Big 12 schedule.
