Arizona State has brought in a veteran defensive presence via the transfer portal and officially recruited former Michigan State cornerback Chance Rucker on January 17, 2026. Rucker comes into Tempe with two years of eligibility left, and he is projected to make a significant contribution to the reformation of the secondary of the Sun Devils in the next season.

Rucker arrives at Arizona State following a three-year stint at Michigan State, where he appeared in 23 games and earned nine starts. He is a former four-star recruit who came out of Denton, Texas, and he had 31 tackles, one interception, and seven pass breakups in his time with the Spartans. He was also early in life to leave a mark in his career, as he was a true freshman in 2023, proving his competence at a high level early on.
Filling a Critical Need
Arizona State entered the offseason facing significant turnover in its defensive backfield, having lost most of its starting secondary from the previous season. Adding Rucker fills that directly, offering experience and depth that have proven to be the Power Four in the cornerback position and depth. He was among two defensive backs Arizona State acquired through the portal the same day as Nigel Pringle out of Arkansas.
Skill Set and Fit
Rucker is 6-foot-1 and 179 pounds and has a physical style of play, as well as press coverage. He is capable of attacking the receivers at the line of scrimmage, and he possesses good instincts in off-coverage. His flexibility enables him to suit in various schemes.
