Arizona State drops out of Top 25 rankings after crushing loss to Mississippi State

The AP voters showed ASU no mercy in the Week 3 rankings.

Week 2 of the college football season is in the books and Sun Devil fans may still be recovering from a heartbreaking loss to Mississippi State on Saturday. ASU erased a 17-point deficit in the second half down in Starkville, even taking a 20-17 lead late in the 4th quarter, but the Bulldogs scored a back-breaking last-minute touchdown to win 24-20.

The No. 12 Sun Devils suffered a critical upset on the road against an unranked SEC opponent, but you would think AP voters might be more forgiving considering other top programs are sitting at 1-1 and still remain in the Top 25. Wrong.

ASU dropped out of the Week 3 rankings entirely after Saturday's loss. They received no grace from the voters but, of course, Alabama (1-1) who lost to an unranked Florida State team in Week 1 moved up from No. 21 to No. 19.

Week 3 AP Top 25 rankings see major shakeup

Outside of Tempe, the new rankings saw some major changes. There were four ranked teams in Week 2 that lost, including ASU.

No. 13 Florida was upset by South Florida, a week removed from the Bulls taking down then-No. 25 Boise State. South Florida now enters the fray at No. 18, clearly leading the way as the Group of Five favorite to make the College Football Playoff.

Missouri and Auburn join the party at No. 25 and No. 24 respectively, while Michigan dropped to No. 23 after being upset by Oklahoma on the road.

If ASU is going to see the rankings again this season, they've got little to no room for error the rest of the year. Next up is a tough home game against Texas State that will be a must-win to get back on track ahead of beginning Big 12 play against Baylor in Week 4.
