Arizona State baseball is poised to sweep the Utah Utes after taking the first two games of their weekend series in Salt Lake City Friday and Saturday.

The Sun Devils earned a 7-3 win on Saturday, racking up all seven runs in the first three innings to chase Utah starter Merit Jones after that bombardment. ASU's Jack Martinez gave a 4.2-inning effort giving up all of Utah's three runs on four hits. His relief assignment, Wyatt Halvorson, earned the win with 2.1 innings of allowing just three hits but not more scoreboard damage. Both pitchers struck out five Utes each. Closer Cole Carlon finished off the final two innings and sat down three batters of his own.

ASU shortstop Matt King led the team with three hits but catcher Brody Briggs sent the most Devils home when they were in scoring position (two). Designated hitter Landon Hairston saw home plate twice, the most on the team on Saturday.

That effort sets up ASU to complete its third sweep of the season and its first in Big 12 Conference play. The Devils took care of business against Ohio State in mid-February to start the season and again against Gonzaga from March 7-9.

With an Arizona loss on the same night, ASU took sole possession of second place in the conference behind just Kansas State. Completing the sweep on Sunday plus a Wildcat loss in Manhattan, Kansas would earn the Devils a share of first place exiting the weekend.
