The Sun Devils arrived in Stillwater this weekend with hopes of a Big 12 regular season title in their sights. What they found on Thursday night was a complete humbling in the form of Harrison Bodendorf.
The Devils potent offense was shut down in 7 innings of 1-run ball from Bodendorf, while the Cowboys offense exploded in the 2nd inning against starter Ben Jacobs en route to a 6-2 final. The loss secured the regular season title for West Virginia, who lost to Kansas 3-0 at home. TCU did their job in taking down Utah in Salt Lake City by a final of 13-5, creating a three-way tie for 2nd place in the Big 12 with two games to play.
Thankfully for the Devils, both Arizona (13-4 loss at Houston) and Kansas State (7-4 loss at Cincinnati) scuffled, leaving a two game lead for the #4 seed. The Devils magic number to clinch a first round bye sits at 1; a Devils win OR a loss by Arizona will accomplish that.
Thanks to the "stronger loss", the Arizona schools flipped spots in the RPI rankings, with Arizona State taking over the 40 spot despite the loss. However, no team wants to back their way into the playoffs. The Devils need a bounce back win in a big way tonight, if nothing else just for the boost to the overall psyche.
Losing Game 1 of a series has not been an immediate cause for concern for the Devils in 2025. 4 series wins this season have come after losing Game 1, the most the Devils have accomplished that since the final season at Packard in 2014. Those series wins have come against Oral Roberts, at TCU, at Baylor, and last weekend at home against Houston.
