After the initial excitement around the hire, many Arizona State fans have cooled on Herm Edwards.
Asking Arizona State football fans today, many have confused feelings regarding Edwards.
As mentioned, he has gone 25-18 in his last four seasons as a Sun Devil which falls somewhere in the ranks of “not bad, but not great.” The .600 winning percentage is good for 55th among active head coaches in the NCAA and ranks Edwards ahead of his predecessor Todd Graham (#62) and noted names like Ed Orgeron (#58) and Mike Leach (#59).
Edwards has consistently finished in the top half of the Pac-12 South but the inability to get the program to that next step which includes contending for the conference and playing in Rose Bowls has left many frustrated.
In addition, the pending NCAA allegations against the Arizona State football program have left the team in a precarious situation. The departure of both offensive and defensive coordinators as well as the entry of twenty Sun Devils in the transfer portal are all signs that something is awry inside the program. That ultimately reflects on the head coach.
VP Ray Anderson fired some and accepted the resignations of many Arizona State staff members but there has been no indication that Edwards himself is intending or has been asked to resign.
Recently, the ASU program as a whole and Herm Edwards personally, were torched by anonymous coaches in the college football community in an Athlon Sport preview of the 2022 Sun Devils.
Coming under fire from other coaches and fans alike, Edwards’ position as the top man of the Arizona State football program seems precarious at best and it is very well likely that a major regression in team success in 2022 will put him on the hot seat or, even worse, on the bus home.
