The departure of Jayden Daniels left the Arizona State quarterback room with a lot of questions.

A three-year starter at the position, Daniels began his Sun Devil career as a true freshman and played in 29 games for Arizona State. His time at the school ended with some drama and it was announced early in 2022 that he would be leaving the program for a new start at Louisiana State University.

Enter Emory Jones.

After four seasons as a Florida Gator, Jones announced his decision to transfer to Arizona State where he will immediately compete for the starting role in a quarterback room that currently consists of fellow transfer Paul Tyson, junior Trenton Bourguet, sophomore Daylin McLemore, and freshmen Finn Collins and Bennett Meredith.

Before the surprising announcement of Jones’ transfer in early May, it looked like the Sun Devils would see a quarterback battle between Tyson and Bourguet throughout the summer. It now seems likely that position is Jones’ to lose with the original competitors competing for the 2nd-string role.

Not seeing much playing time his first three seasons as a Gator, Jones had a good 2021 campaign that saw him throw for 2,734 yards/19 touchdowns and rush for 759 yards and an additional 4 scores.

That performance made many in college football take notice and Jones will undoubtedly be highly motivated to continue the trend at Arizona State in hopes of a Senior Bowl invite and, hopefully, an NFL future.

High-level quarterback play will be essential to making up for the inexperience of the wide receiver group and much of ASU’s success in the Pac-12 will depend on Jones stepping confidently into the role of starting quarterback and utilizing his dual-threat abilities to take advantage of opposing defenses.
