5. UCLA Bruins (10-7, 3-1 Pac-12) LW: 5

A week after sweeping the Bay Area schools, UCLA split against its foes from Oregon.

In the first of the two games, UCLA needed five extra minutes to come out victorious. It’s a miracle the Bruins were even in that position. At one point in the second half, UCLA trailed by 17.

UCLA trailed 76-68 with just 45 seconds remaining, but a 12-4 run to end regulation helped send the game to overtime. Defensively, the Bruins stepped up in overtime, allowing just four points to their opposition.

Prince Ali was the most notable Bruin in the come-from-behind win. Averaging just over 10 points per game, Ali exploded against the Ducks, leading the team in scoring with 22 points.

Ultimately, UCLA won 87-84.

A game later, however, it was a different story. Just up the road in Corvallis, the Bruins fell 79-66 to Oregon State.

An 11-4 squad, Oregon State is no slouch, led by Tres Tinkle and Stephen Thompson Jr. The Bruins struggled to stop that duo, which combined for 31 points. Plus, five Beavers ended in double figures, including Alfred Hollins — who came off the bench.

UCLA was unable to keep up with Oregon State’s strong shooting performance, shooting 38.1 percent compared to the Beavers’ 47.5.

Three of UCLA’s starters ended the game in double figures, but a poor game by the bench contributed to the defeat. The reserves combined for just nine points on 2-of-10 shooting.

After consecutive busy weeks, UCLA gets a slight reprieve. The Bruins travel across town to face USC, another squad that has been up-and-down thus far.
