ASU Basketball: 2019 Pac-12 Week 4 Power Rankings
By Trevor Booth
10. Utah Utes
While Thanksgiving meals may have served the Utes well, their trip to Fullerton, California, and the Wooden Legacy Tournament did not.
There, Larry Krystkowiak’s rebuilding squad lost two of three games against Hawai’i and Northwestern. Utah’s lone victory in the tournament came over Grand Canyon, who also finished 1-2 in the tournament.
In the two losses, the Utes didn’t get enough production from their top dogs, Sedrick Barefield and Donnie Tillman. Barefield scored four points on 1-of-8 shooting in the loss to the Rainbow Warriors, and Tillman dropped to six points while shooting 1-of-4 from the field in the loss to the Wildcats.
With the Utes losing big production from David Collette, Tyler Rawson and Justin Bibbins, they haven’t yet built a team identity. While Barefield and Tillman are the two top scorers, they also are the top playmakers, leading the team in assists with 3.8 and 1.3, respectively.
The lack of ball movement has allowed teams to run on the Utes in the open floor, as their 14 turnovers per game match their assist total.
Now 3-3 on the season, the Utes, like several teams in the conference, may have lost an off-chance to make the NCAA Tournament.
Utah will return home this Saturday to face Tulsa.
