ASU volleyball lost their fifth straight game Friday night as they were swept by No. 16 Oregon in three straight sets.

Arizona State hosted Oregon Friday hoping to recreate the stunning upset they had in Eugene only weeks ago. This time Oregon was the team that came in to town and left victorious (23-25, 18-25, 21-25).

The Sun Devils came into this game on a four-game losing streak trying to turn it around and defeat the 16th-ranked Oregon Ducks.

They were missing a big piece of their team in Ivana Jeremic, who had to sit out because she had strep throat. The Sun Devils missed her dearly as the team was defeated almost effortlessly.

Ronika Stone, junior outside hitter, from Oregon had herself a night. She finished with 15 kills on 24 attempts and scored on a variety of attacks. The main attack for Stone tonight was her swing attack.

The Sun Devil’s defense had a hard time digging and even getting touches on her swing attacks. She would usually go across court, but right when the Devils started to adjust she would hit it line and get the point that way.

For ASU, without their star hitter Jeremic, it was up to for to Alyse Ford set the tempo for the team. She did not do that. Ford struggled in the game, getting only nine kills on 24 attempts with six hitting errors.

The rest of the Sun Devils did not step up either. Danica Krstonošic, Jeremic’s replacement only had two kills on the night with nine attempts. She had three hitting errors and a -.111 hitting percentage

Nicole Peterson, who had been doing really well in the outside position this season, only had one kill the entire game, and only had 11 assists setting the ball.

Overall the Sun Devils were not on their best game and they needed to be to have had a chance against the highly talented and athletic Oregon team.

This loss makes it five straight losses for the Sun Devils. They have not won since they got into the top 25 rankings over two weeks ago.

“We have to be aggressive but smart, and that’s what is hard with this team,” Coach Sanja Tomasevic said, “They don’t know how to do that.”

Tomasevic talked about how her team had a game plan in certain situations, but her team always tries to smash the ball and that is not always the best option.

The team is still very young and Tomasevic says that they don’t have the privilege of having a super deep bench either.
