After suffering their fourth seven-point loss of the season, ASU football looks to stay in the Pac-12 South with a road test against USC.

Arizona State left the field last Thursday night frustrated after falling short again by a touchdown.

The Sun Devils dropped their first home game of the season losing to Stanford 20-13 in a defensive battle.

ASU struck first with a field goal from Brandon Ruiz, but the game really changed in the second quarter with back-to-back turnovers from inside the Stanford 40.

Those two takeaways led to the Cardinal getting six points and taking a 6-3 lead into halftime.

Stanford would extend the lead to 20-6 late in the third quarter behind a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback K.J. Costello to wide receiver JJ Arcega-Whiteside and a one-yard touchdown run from running back Cameron Scarlett.

The Sun Devils would make it a one-possession game with 7:50 remaining in regulation on a 10-yard touchdown run from quarterback Manny Wilkins.

Arizona State did the get the ball back with two minutes remaining and no timeouts with a chance to tie the game.

Wilkins drove the team into USC territory in the waning seconds, but threw the ball in bounds to running back Eno Benjamin and the clock ran out on the Sun Devils.

Another week, another touchdown defeat.

More from Devils in Detail

The offense has lacked consistency so far this season. They’ve struggled to find the right balance of passing and running.

Last Thursday, Arizona State threw the ball 45 times for 353 yards while running the ball 23 times for 84 yards.

Benjamin was a non-factor last week finishing with 11 carries for 38 yards.

Arizona State has to find a way to get the offense more balanced and to find explosive plays. Considering the talent on the offensive side of the ball, they shouldn’t be struggling this much.

On the flip side, the defense improved last week holding Stanford in check for the majority of the night.

Stanford only averaged three yards a carry in the game with running back Bryce Love totaling 21 yards on 11 carries.

Scarlett became the main tailback in the second half as it was clear Love was not at 100 percent finishing with 54 yards on nine carries and the aforementioned touchdown.

Next up for Arizona State is the USC Trojans, who are coming off a 41-28 loss in Salt Lake City against Utah.

The Utes’ offense had a field day against the Trojans defense with quarterback Tyler Huntley totaling 374 total yards and five total touchdowns in the win.

Utah running back Zack Moss also had a big game on the ground rushing for 136 yards on 25 carries.

In total, Utah outgained USC by a whopping 336 yards as USC only picked up 10 first downs all game.

The loss became more costly for USC when JT Daniels left last Saturday’s game with a concussion. His status is uncertain meaning we could see third-stringer Jack Sears make his first career start.

Backup QB Matt Fink is out with broken ribs.

The door is wide open for Arizona State to take this game. The team is more healthy than USC, they’ve had two more days of rest due to playing Thursday night and the possibility of USC starting a third-string quarterback.

Arizona State is facing as close to a must-win if they want to be bowl eligible considering their brutal schedule upcoming with divisional leaders Utah, a resurgent UCLA team, an explosive Oregon side and a rivalry matchup at Arizona.

So this game is important for Arizona State. For the Sun Devils to win at USC, it just comes down to execution.
