ASU football heads to Boulder for a pivotal game against undefeated No. 21 Colorado with major Pac-12 South implications on the line.

Just like we all predicted, this week’s meeting between Arizona State and Colorado carries significant Pac-12 South implications.

Entering the season the Buffaloes and the Sun Devils were both picked to finish at the bottom of the division and here they are meeting to stay in the race.

Arizona State snapped its two-game losing streak with an emphatic 52-24 win over Oregon State behind Eno Benjamin‘s historic night.

Benjamin shattered the school record rushing for 312 yards and four total touchdowns as the Sun Devils tallied 558 total yards.

Quarterback Manny Wilkins threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns despite playing ill. Wide receiver N’Keal Harry got more involved in the offense recording five catches, 84 yards and one touchdown.

The offense played up to the pregame expectations but there are still concerns about the defense. Oregon State running back Jermar Jefferson finished with 254 yards and two touchdowns, which is concerning considering the Beavers were playing from behind all night.

However, the pass defense did a good job getting pressure on Beavers quarterback Conor Blount as he was sacked five times and limited to 145 passing yards.

Next up for Arizona State is No. 21 Colorado, the last remaining unbeaten team in the Pac-12.

Colorado is atop the Pac-12 South with a 1-0 conference record after defeating UCLA 38-16 last Friday behind big performances from their three best offensive players.

Quarterback Steven Montez continued his breakout season throwing for 237 yards and one touchdown while also rushing for 81 yards and two scores.

Running back Travon McMillian, the replacement of arguably the best tailback in school history Phillip Lindsay, rushed for 102 yards and one touchdown.

Wide receiver Laviska Shenault Jr. continued to make his case of joining the upper echelon of Pac-12 wide outs  recording 12 catches, 126 yards and one touchdown in the victory.

Shenault Jr. leads the conference averaging 145.3 yards per game with the next closest receiver to him being Washington’s Aaron Fuller at 94.8 receiving yards per game.

Cornerbacks Chase Lucas and Kobe Williams, whoever is matched on Shenault Jr., will have a tough task in limiting his production.

The deciding factor in this game will be Arizona State’s run defense. They need to do a better job of containing the running game.

Linebackers Merlin Robertson, Malik Lawal and Jay Jay Wilson will need to be the run stoppers in this game and also be a spy on Montez, who could use his feet to extend and create plays.

Also, it’s essential the defense gets off the field on third down considering the altitude they’ll be playing in. This correlates with the offense who need to be diligent in their offense to give the defense ample time to rest.

Even though the Pac-12 South is wide open, this feels like a must win for Arizona State considering they have one conference loss already while still having Stanford and Oregon remaining on their schedule.

For Colorado, a win would get them to 2-0 in conference play with a road game at Washington on Oct. 20 as the only tough game on the schedule.
