ASU football looks to spoil Washington’s season for a second straight year as the 10th-ranked Huskies look to avenge last year’s loss versus the Sun Devils.

So they meet again.

After Arizona State crushed Washington’s College Football Playoff hopes with a 13-7 upset win in Tempe last season, the two meet again in Seattle Saturday night.

The Sun Devils are coming off their first loss of the season losing 28-21 at San Diego State as the Aztecs gashed Arizona State for 311 rushing yards.

Arizona State was in control of the game in the first half, but Herm Edwards’ decision to go for it on 4th-and-short with less than two minutes in the first half instead of a field goal to give them a 17-7 lead was the turning point in the game.

The Sun Devils turned the ball over on downs and SDSU completed a perfect two-minute drill scoring a game-tying touchdown eight seconds before halftime.

More from Devils in Detail

San Diego State carried that momentum into the second half putting together long scoring drives while preventing Arizona State from getting a first down until there was five minutes left in the fourth quarter.

Despite the Sun Devils’ ineffectiveness on offense in the second half, they still had a chance to win the game. A late targeting call prevented ASU from having a 1st-and-goal at the two yard line as Wilkins’ Hail Mary attempt from the SDSU 35-yard line fell short.

The Sun Devils will look to get back on track against the 10th-ranked Washington Huskies. Washington sits at 2-1 (1-0 Pac-12) after a 21-7 win in Salt Lake City against Utah.

Washington’s offense has been sluggish in their games against FBS opponents in Auburn and Utah. Quarterback Jake Browning threw for just 155 yards last week against the Utes and has four touchdowns and four interceptions on the season.

Running back Myles Gaskin has been their most productive player as he’s coming off a 155-yard, one touchdown performance against the Utes.

A staple with Washington is their stout defense, specifically their secondary led by cornerback Byron Murphy and safety Taylor Rapp.

A key for the Sun Devils will be to stop Gaskin. If they can limit the Huskies rushing attack, it will allow the Sun Devils to pressure Browning and force him to make plays.

Arizona State recorded five sacks of Browning in last year’s meeting as the Huskies were limited to just one touchdown.

This game has implications for both teams, especially for Washington as they look to contend for the College Football Playoff and stay atop with the Pac-12 North ahead of Stanford and Oregon, who will meet in Eugene Saturday.

For the Sun Devils, a win will give them a leg up in the Pac-12 South with the division wide open after slow starts from USC, Utah and Arizona.
