ASU volleyball won 2 out of 3 games during the Sparky Classic this weekend.

The Arizona State University women’s volleyball team won their first two matches and dropped the final this weekend during the Sparky Classic at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe, Arizona.

The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks were the first team to face the Sun Devils on Friday. Ivana Jeremic and Courtney Leffel helped lead the charge for the Sun Devils as they dropped the first set but proceeded to win the next three as they won the match in four sets (23-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-17).

Jeremic recorded her fifth double-double of the season during the match with 20 kills and 17 digs. It is her third match of the season with at least 20 kills.

Leffel lead the charge for the defense as she had a career-high 28 digs in a four-set match. Leffel leads the team in total digs this season with 190 through 11 games and is currently third in the Pac-12.

In the second match on Friday the Sun Devils faced the Bulldogs from Gonzaga. The Sun Devils won the first two sets but conceded the third. They were able to bounce back and win the fourth set to win the match 3-1 (25-20, 25-21, 21-25, 25-14).

Jeremic recorded yet another double-double in this match with 12 kills and 17 digs. It is her sixth double-double on the season and is enough to lead the Pac-12.

In the third and final game of the Sparky Classic on Saturday, the Sun Devils took on the Texas State Bobcats. The Sun Devils came out slow and didn’t get any faster as the game went on. The Sun Devils were swept in three straight sets (25-22, 28-26, 25-17).

Multiple Sun Devils struggled as the team seemed to be one step behind the whole game. Jeremic only had six kills the entire match and Leffel only had got eight total digs.

Alyse Ford was one Sun Devils that seemed to stand out and bring another level during the game. Ford finished with a team leading 16 total kills including 7 kills in the second set alone.

Ford is a senior transfer from USC and is eager and excited for what this team can do in Pac-12 play.

“This team is just so hungry, and they are still really young. We really just have to come together as a family and put our heads down start grinding it out,” Ford said. “Teach everybody what grit and grind is.”
