ASU Football: Who’s the toughest opponents on the schedule?
By Sam Ficarro
12. UTSA Roadrunners
Arizona State’s season opener comes against Texas-San Antonio as this completes a home-and-home between the two schools.
The Sun Devils defeated the Roadrunners in the Alamadome two years ago 32-28 thanks to a 17-point fourth quarter from Arizona State.
ASU scored on a Zane Gonzalez field goal, a 45-yard touchdown pass from Manny Wilkins to Fred Gammage and a two-yard touchdown run from Kalen Ballage to seal the comeback.
UTSA won’t have their two best players in defensive end Marcus Davenport, who was selected in the first round of the NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints, and recently-graduated quarterback Dalton Sturm.
Sturm lit up the Sun Devil defense throwing for 229 yards and three touchdowns to go with a team-high 106 rushing yards and one touchdown.
Wilkins had a really solid game as well for the Sun Devils throwing for 264 yards and two touchdowns.
Last season, UTSA went 6-5 last season and were not selected for a bowl game with their best non-conference win coming against a one-win Baylor team.
The Roadrunners went 3-5 in C-USA play with wins over Rice, UTEP and Marshall.
With UTSA having a new quarterback, Arizona State should be able to win this game with no problem in what will be the home opener for the Sun Devils.
Arizona State will hope to avoid overlooking UTSA with Michigan State coming to Tempe the following Saturday.
