ASU softball defeated Utah 7-2 Saturday to secure their first series win in three weeks as Breanna Macha threw her ninth complete game of the season.

Arizona State continued their strong play in Salt Lake City this weekend winning the second game of the three-game series 7-2 over Utah.

The ninth-ranked Sun Devils swung the bats well again and received a solid pitching performance from senior Breanna Macha.

Macha held the Utes in check throwing a complete game allowing two earned runs on seven hits to go with five strikeouts.

It was a 1-1 game after three innings following an RBI fielder’s choice from ASU catcher Rylee Maston and Utah shortstop Heather Bowen.

Arizona State broke the game open in the fifth inning on a bases-clearing triple from center fielder Morgan Howe bringing her season RBI total to 31.

With the game 4-1, the Sun Devils would add three insurance runs in the seventh inning on an RBI single from first baseman Danielle Gibson and a two-run home from second baseman Marisa Stankiewicz for her eighth homer of the season.

Utah starter Hailey Hilburn was pulled in the fifth inning after allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Katie Donovan came on in relief for the Utes and threw 2.2 innings allowing three earned runs on six hits and four strikeouts.
