ASU Football: D.J. Calhoun signs with Cleveland Browns
By Sam Ficarro
Former ASU football linebacker D.J. Calhoun has signed with the Cleveland Browns after playing every game of his four-year career.
D.J. Calhoun, who finished second on the team in tackles last season, has signed with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted free agent.
The El Cerrito, California native joins fellow teammates Demario Richard and JoJo Wicker to sign as an undrafted free agent along with the three Sun Devils drafted in Kalen Ballage, Christian Sam and Sam Jones.
The Browns will now have two Sun Devils on their roster as Calhoun will join his former teammate, kicker Zane Gonzalez, who was selected in the seventh round of last year’s draft.
Calhoun earned the reputation his senior year of being one of the most surefire tacklers in the nation having missed only two tackles all season according to Pro Football Focus.
The four-year linebacker finished the 2016 and 2017 seasons in the top five of the Pac-12 in solo tackles including ranking sixth in total tackles in the conference last season.
Calhoun will join a large rookie class for the Browns as they made nine picks in this weekend’s NFL Draft joining fellow rookie linebacker Genard Avery, who was selected in the fifth round out of Memphis.
The other Browns linebackers on the current roster includes Jaime Collins, Tank Carder, Christian Kirksey and five linebackers with three or less years of experience.
Collins will be a great mentor for Calhoun to learn from as he’s had a lot of previous success with the New England Patriots.

Calhoun, who has also excelled on special teams with his noteworthy play coming in 2016 when he returned an onside kick for a touchdown against California, will have a great chance to make the roster as a special team at the very least with the potential of earning snaps at linebacker this season.
