ASU softball opened up a three-game series at Oregon State with a Friday doubleheader as the Sun Devils took the first game and fell short in the second game.

With the weather forecast looking grim Saturday, No. 7 Arizona State and No. 25 Oregon State played a doubleheader Friday to begin their three-game series.

The first game was dominated by the Sun Devils as ASU won it 10-1 in five innings, the most runs scored in a Pac-12 game this season.

ASU jumped on Beaver starting pitcher Meehra Nelson from the get-go as the Sun Devils scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI single by center fielder Morgan Howe and a two-run double by left fielder Skylar McCarty.

After an RBI sac fly from infielder Marisa Stankiewicz made it 4-0 Sun Devils after three innings, ASU cracked the game open in the fourth inning with four runs.

Shortstop Jade Gortarez drove in a run on a fielder’s choice with the bases loaded with Howe delivering the big hit driving in two on a single up the middle. A throwing error by Oregon State scored Gortarez and made it 8-0.

ASU tacked on two insurance runs in the fifth inning to secure the run-rule victory as G Juarez continued her stellar pitching earning her 16th win of the season.

Juarez threw a complete game allowing one earned run on four hits to go with seven strikeouts.

Nelson picked up her seventh loss of the season for OSU as she went 3.1 innings allowing eight runs (four earned) on six hits, one walk and three strikeouts. Oregon State committed three errors in the series opener.

In the second game, Breanna Macha took the mound for the Sun Devils against Beaver starter Mariah Mazon.

Oregon State flipped the script from the first game building an early 4-0 lead after three innings on a pair of RBI singles from first baseman Hope Brandner. On Brandner’s hit in the third, Gortarez committed a throwing error resulting in two runs to cross the plate.

That would be enough runs for Mazon has she held the Sun Devils’ offense in check with the only blemish being a two-run home run from first baseman Danielle Gibson in the sixth inning.

Oregon State took the second game 4-2 snapping Arizona State’s nine-game winning streak as Mazon threw a complete game allowing two earned runs on five hits, three walks and six strikeouts for her ninth win of the season.

Macha pitched well for ASU throwing a six-inning complete game allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits to go with three walks and four strikeouts.
