ASU Softball: Sun Devils finish Mary Nutter Classic 4-1

ASU softball finished the Mary Nutter Classic 4-1 defeating Cal State Fullerton 7-3 with Kindra Hackbarth and Bella Loomis each driving in a pair of runs.

Arizona State is leaving Palm Springs, California, with four wins in five games as the Sun Devils defeated Cal State Fullerton 7-3 on the final day of the 2018 Mary Nutter Classic.

First baseman Danielle Gibson picked up where she left off Saturday hitting a solo home run for the second straight game to give ASU a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

The Titans came back and scored three runs in the third inning on a pair of RBI singles from left fielder Sammie Vandiver and third baseman Deshea Hill and an RBI triple from center fielder Ari Williams.

ASU reclaimed the lead and held it for good with a four-run fifth inning as infielder Bella Loomis, right fielder Kindra Hackbarth, shortstop Jade Gortarez and center fielder Morgan Howe all hit RBI singles off Cal State Fullerton starter Hannah Johnson.

Johnson would finish her day throwing 3.2 innings allowing five earned runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Leading 5-3 heading to the sixth, Arizona State tacked on two insurance runs on RBI singles from Loomis and Hackbarth to make it 7-3 Sun Devils.

Breanna Macha got the start for Arizona State and picked up her fifth win of the season throwing a complete game allowing three earned runs on six hits with two strikeouts.

Arizona State, who was ranked No. 15 in the latest ESPN/USA Softball Poll, now sit with a 13-2 record as they are off to their best start since 2014 when they opened the season 18-0.

Next up for the Sun Devils will be the Devil Classic starting Friday where they’ll play Coastal Carolina twice and New Mexico State.
