After winning all four games in last weekend’s Littlewood Classic, the ASU softball team split the opening day of the Mary Nutter Classic.

ASU softball is now 10-2 on the year after splitting its games Thursday in the Mary Nutter Classic.

The Sun Devils opened the tournament with a 3-1 win over Mississippi State. Freshman Giselle “G” Juarez led Arizona State to victory throwing a complete game with a career-high 12 strikeouts.

ASU started the scoring in the first inning when Danielle Gibson drove in two RBIs with a double. Trailing 2-0, Mississippi State showed signs of life when Mia Davidson shrunk the Sun Devil lead to one as the result of a solo home run.

In the top of the seventh, ASU responded with a much-needed insurance run from a Jade Gortarez double to make the final score 3-1.

Although the win over Mississippi State marked the 10th win in a row for ASU, the Sun Devils’ fate would change later in the day against No. 4 Oklahoma.

The Sooners brought three runners across the plate in the first inning due to an OU home run and an RBI groundout. Arizona State answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second from an RBI single and a fielder’s choice.

While the game was in ASU’s reach after two frames, Oklahoma busted the lead open in the third. The Sooners went on to score four unanswered runs to give OU a 7-2 win against ASU.

Jocelyn Alo and Sydney Romero combined for five of Oklahoma’s RBIs with Alo hitting two home runs.

After the split, ASU is still 10-2 on the season going into the second day of Mary Nutter Classic play, and the team still plays three more games in the tournament hosted in Palm Springs, California.

ASU plays a game against LIU Brooklyn Friday morning and the Sun Devils also have games against Liberty and Cal State Fullerton later this weekend.
