Following a weekend in which the team won both of its games against Arizona, the ASU women’s basketball team fell Friday to No. 8 Oregon at home.

After a successful Territorial Cup weekend, the Arizona State men’s basketball team suffered a 57-44 loss to eighth-ranked Oregon, diminishing the team’s record to 19-10 (10-7) on the season.

Sabrina Ionescu led the Oregon scoring effort with 16 points, and Ruthy Hebard and Maite Cazorla followed closely behind with 14 a piece.

In spite of the fact the Ducks won by double-digits, it was a tight game in the first half. Arizona State actually led Oregon, 25-24, at halftime.

The second half was a different story.

Oregon took the lead for the first time since the first quarter when the Ducks started the third quarter on a 5-0 run.

It appeared the Sun Devils bent but did not break when they tied the game at 31 later in the quarter. However, the Ducks changed that quickly.

Following a Kianna Ibis jumper to tie the game, Oregon went on an 11-0 run, which helped make the score 44-33 at the conclusion of the third. Ibis credits the third quarter drought to a lack of team connectedness.

“I feel like we lost a sense of urgency,” Ibis said. “We lost a sense of connectedness, and we just didn’t get it done.”

ASU stayed in the game during the fourth quarter, but the team just could not mount a comeback, and Oregon took the game by a final score of 57-44.

In the loss, Arizona State struggled from the field, shooting a measly 31 percent field goal percentage.

“We were really off offensively, and I just think this young team is letting things bother them,” ASU head coach Charli Turner Thorne said. “They’re just not connected enough on offense.”

On the other hand, Coach Turner Thorne said she was impressed by her team’s performance defensively.

“I thought we had a good defensive effort,” Turner Thorne said. “We held them about 20 points below their average.”

With only one game left in Pac-12 regular season play, Arizona State is now 10-7 in conference, sitting at fifth in the league.
