ASU Tennis: Sun Devils push win streak to five with wins over San Diego and Pepperdine
ASU tennis secured their first road sweep of the season over the weekend beating San Diego and Pepperdine to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Arizona State (5-3) began the weekend with a trip to San Diego to face the Toreros (4-2) on Saturday.
After dropping the doubles point, the Sun Devils needed to win four out of the six singles matches in order to continue their win streak.
Efforts by Michael Geerts, Benjamin Hannestad, Tim Ruehl and Tom Wright helped the Sun Devils complete the comeback.
Hannestad handled Joel Gamerov in two sets on court three. The sets ended 6-2 and 6-3.
On courts five and six, Ruehl and Wright defeated San Diego’s David Norfeldt and Alexandros Araouzos, respectively.
Ruehl clinched his match with a 6-2 win after a competitive 7-6 set to open up play.

Meanwhile, Wright had little trouble in downing Araouzos, as he claimed both sets. The first set ended 6-4, then he cruised to a 6-2 win in the second.
With San Diego’s August Holmgren and Nico Borter earning wins over Makey Rakotomalala and Andrea Bolla, the game came down to the action on court one.
Michael Geerts finished off the Toreros’ Gui Osario in three sets to win a thriller. While Geerts took the first set 7-5, Osario countered with 6-3 win in the second.
Although he let the second set slip away, Geerts stormed back and throttled Osario to the tune of a 6-0 win in the third set.
The Sun Devils became the second team to beat the Toreros this season, with the other being the Duke Blue Devils.
Following the win, the Sun Devils traveled to Malibu, Calif. to take on the Pepperdine Waves (1-6) Sunday.
After a hotly-contested game against San Diego, the Sun Devils dismantled the Waves with a 4-0 win.
To begin the match, the pairings of Wright with Pierre Louis Dodens and Bolla with Rakotomalala excelled.
Each duo earned doubles wins to claim the doubles point for Arizona State.
Will Kirkman won the next point for the visiting Devils, as he took both sets 6-1 on court six against Felipe Galvao.
After Kirkman finished his match, Dodens continued his strong outing with a two-set win over Pepperdine’s Scotland Garapedian.
Dodens won a lopsided first set 6-0, then claimed the second set 6-3.
The final domino fell on court three, where Ruehl bested the Waves’ Yusuf Khamis.
Following the trend, Ruehl made quick work of Khamis in the first set, winning 6-0. However, Khamis put up a good fight in the second set, but Ruehl prevailed 7-5.
The sweep extended the Sun Devils’ current win streak to five games, which began after a three-game losing streak to kick off the new season.
