ASU swimming teams took losses to Cal on the road in Berkley Friday afternoon.
The men lost 158-133 to the top-ranked Bears team and the women were crushed 172-118 by the fifth-ranked Cal women’s squad.
In men’s, Junior Carson Sand led the way for the Cal with 18 points. He finished first in both the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke. Both of his times were NCAA b-cuts.
Cal’s December PAC-12 swimmer of the month Justin Lynch had 13 points for the Bears. He won the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 19.88 seconds nearly posting an NCAA a-cut. He also helped the Bears to a first-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay.
For the Sun Devils, Benjamin Olszewski had 17 points and Youssef Selim had 18 points. Olszewski won the 500-yard free and finished in second in both the 1000-yard free and the 400-yard individual medley. His 500-yard free time of 4:24.57 was good enough for an NCAA b-cut. Selim posted victories in both the one and three-meter diving events.
Another impressive performance from the Devils was freshman Grant House posting 14 points including the victory in the 400-yard IM. His time of 3:53.49 was good enough for an NCAA b-cut.
In women’s, Noemie Thomas was the top-performer for the Bears with 18 points. She won the 200-yard and 100-yard butterfly events and was also on the winning 400-yard medley relay team. Both of her fly events qualified her for NCAA b-cuts.
Robin-Neumann also had 18 points for the Bears. She took home victories in the 200 and 500-yard free events. Her 200-yard free time of 1:47.35 was good enough for an NCAA b-cut.
For the Devils, Junior Marlies Ross led the way with 17 points. She won the 100-yard breaststroke and finished in second-place in both the 100-yard breast and the 400-yard IM. Her time of 4:18.41 in the 400-yard IM was good enough for an NCAA b-cut.
The Devils have a quick turnaround as both the men’s and women’s teams remain in the bay area with a tough test at Stanford on Saturday afternoon.
