There has been a noticeable improvement around the ASU men’s basketball program. Defense and low-post offense has fueled the team to a 2-0 start.

Through two games, Bobby Hurley looks to have Arizona State headed in the right direction. The Sun Devils have put up over 90 points in both of their contests and continue to establish themselves defensively.

Against San Diego State Tuesday, we all got a glimpse of what ASU is capable of. Led by senior Tra Holder‘s game-high 24 points and a double-double from Romello White, the Sun Devils controlled every facet of the game en route to a 22-point win.

What is wild to think is that Arizona State is just beginning to scratch the surface of its potential.

ASU is exceeding early-season expectations, playing with seven healthy scholarship players while forwards Mickey Mitchell and Kimani Lawrence are on the mend.

At full strength, ASU is nine-deep bolstering a roster loaded with athleticism.

Featuring a backcourt of Holder, Shannon Evans II and Kodi Justice, the Sun Devils possess one of the most veteran units in the Pac-12 complemented by the presence of electric freshman Remy Martin off the bench.

On the low block, the tandem of White and De’Quon Lake look like a dynamic 1-2 punch that can pound the ball inside, crash the glass and alter shots on the other end of the floor. Though a small sample size, the future of the frontcourt is bright.

The newcomers in Tempe have made quick adjustments to the speed and physicality of Division I basketball. The additions of Lawrence and Mitchell will provide Hurley with enhanced depth and two more capable playmakers.

While there is a lot of basketball left to be played, it’s not out of the question to say that a healthy Sun Devils team could vie for a top-four seed in the Pac-12.
