Once deemed as the hardest stretch this season, ASU football has the chance to win the final game of this stretch Saturday night versus a reeling USC team.

It’s Homecoming Week for Arizona State and the wrap up the week with a marquee Saturday night game versus No. 21 USC.

The Sun Devils are coming off a dominant win at Utah last week in which the defense held the Utes to 10 points and 265 total yards.

Capped off by a pick-six by tight end-turned-linebacker Jay Jay Wilson, the Sun Devils finished the day with four interceptions of Utes quarterback Tyler Huntley.

Arizona State’s offense was carried by the running game as Demario Richard finished with 18 carries, 93 yards and a touchdown with Kalen Ballage tacking on 75 yards on 14 rushes.

After back-to-back outstanding defensive performances, the Sun Devils will look to complete a brutal stretch at home versus No. 21 USC.

More from Devils in Detail

The Trojans are coming off a humiliating 49-14 loss at Notre Dame last week in which they were shut out at halftime and got both touchdowns in the third quarter.

Quarterback Sam Darnold played alright throwing 20-of-28 passes for 229 yards, two touchdowns and one interception, but it was the defense that struggled.

The Trojans defense allowed 497 yards to Notre Dame with running back Josh Adams rushing for 191 yards and three touchdowns.

Saturday’s night game has a lot on the line as the winner controls their own destiny in the Pac-12 South.

USC enters as the divisional leaders with a 4-1 record with Arizona State a half-game back at 3-1.

With Arizona on the horizon for both teams, the winner would just have to win out their remaining conference games to secure a spot in Santa Clara for the Pac-12 Championship Game.

The key for the Sun Devils will be to control the clock. Arizona State currently ranks 12th in the nation and first in the Pac-12 in time of possession averaging 33.08 minutes of possession per game.

In result, it’s given the ASU defense plenty of rest, and it’s showing with the way they’ve played the last two weeks.

Part of the defensive struggles the past two years was the amount of time they were on the field because of how quick the offense operated.

Head coach Todd Graham and offensive coordinator Billy Napier have slowed down the offense considerably, picking and choosing when to go quick.

For the defense, it’s all about pressuring Darnold and challenging an injury-filled USC offensive line.

ASU should utilize a similar gameplan to the Washington game in which they pressure Jake Browning relentlessly forcing multiple three-and-outs and now allowing any points until the fourth quarter.

Confidence is really high with Arizona State as this has the feel of a big game, with USC having all the pressure of trying to right a season that began with National Championship expectations.
