After securing a stunning upset of No. 5 Washington, ASU football head back at on the road to face Utah in a pivotal Pac-12 South matchup.

ASU football is back on the road Saturday to face the Utah Utes in a crucial Pac-12 South showdown.

The Sun Devils are riding high after a 13-7 upset win over No. 5 Washington thanks to gusty play-calling from head coach Todd Graham and Arizona State’s defense.

Graham opted to go for it on fourth-down three times converting every time, including on the game’s only touchdown drive and the game-clinching drive to run out the clock.

The Sun Devils offense struggled for the most part moving the ball against a stout Washington defense, but Arizona State’s defense stole the show.

Huskies quarterback Jake Browning was left scrambling for the majority of the game eventually getting sacked five times due to a variety of looks from Phil Bennett’s defense.

More from Devils in Detail

The defense showed its true potential last week against the highest-scoring offense in the Pac-12, and will look to have a repeat performance against the Utes.

Utah is coming off a 28-27 loss at USC last week in a big blow to their Pac-12 South hopes as the Utes’ failed two-point conversion with 42 seconds remaining in regulation proved to be the deciding play.

Kyle Whittingham’s team was frustrated to leave Los Angeles without a win after they surrendered a 21-7 halftime lead.

Quarterback Troy Williams will likely make his third-straight start after having a solid game last week combining for 275 yards and three touchdowns — one passing, rushing and receiving.

Utah’s defense is the strength of this team as they ranked second in the Pac-12 in scoring defense (20.0 points per game) and third in total defense (350.3 yards per game allowed).

The Utes came to Tempe last season and steamrolled the Sun Devils thanks to a potent rushing attack with Utah rushing for 201 yards.

Now-graduated running back Joe Williams finished with 15 carries, 190 yards and two touchdowns in the 49-26 Utes victory.

Utah’s offense has not been nearly as dangerous this season as they rank eighth in total offense and scoring defense in the conference, and that bodes well for the Sun Devils.

The key will be the play of Arizona State’s offense as the Sun Devils haven’t gotten a complete game from that unit yet.

The Sun Devils hope they can snap a nine-game conference road losing streak and keep pace with USC in the Pac-12 South with a win Saturday.
