ASU Volleyball: Sun Devils go 3-0 in Maverick Classic

ASU Volleyball completed its non-conference action this weekend with a sweep at the UT Arlington Maverick Classic after a pair of wins Saturday.

Arizona State defeated Lamar, Houston Baptist and UT-Arlington in three sets, four sets and three sets, respectively. The sweep brings ASU to an overall record of 10-2 going into conference play.

The Sun Devils came into the tournament off another sweep in the Northern Arizona Tournament, defeating Cal State Bakersfield, Northern Arizona and Utah State last weekend.

In ASU’s first match of the tourney, the team defeated Lamar 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-18). Oluoma Okaro led the team in kills with 15, and freshman Griere Hughes followed behind with 13. ASU hit efficiently in the game with a percentage of .340.

In game two against Houston Baptist, ASU won the first two sets of the match, but fell 25-17 in set three. However, the Devils got hot to start set four, starting on a 12-6 run and eventually winning the set 25-19, completing the victory.

Halle Harker led the team in digs with 23. Harker moved up to third all-time in program history in digs, passing Christy Nore. She now has a total of 1633 digs in her career, and she trails Stephanie Preach for second on the all-time digs list by 377.

ASU completed the tournament with a victory against the tourney hosts, UT-Arlington, in three sets (25-14, 25-16, 25-21). Okaro and Hughes were once again first and second on the team in kills with 17 and 13, respectively. Nicole Peterson also added to the winning effort with her first career double-double, recording 38 assists and 10 digs.

With the win, the Sun Devils moved to 10-2 on the season in the non-conference with Pac-12 play beginning Thursday.

ASU starts conference play against Arizona Thursday. The Wildcats enter the game 6-3, and they won two of three this weekend at the Wildcat Classic. Thursday’s match against Arizona starts at 8 p.m. PST and can be seen on Pac-12 Network.
